Cap de Formentor by car: the summer road closure
Closed to private cars 10:00–22:00, from 15 May to 18 October 2026. The TIB bus 334, the shuttle, and what to do if you arrive inside that window.
The road out to Cap de Formentor, the Ma-2210, is narrow, full of tight bends, and has parking for far fewer cars than want to go up. So every summer the Consell de Mallorca restricts access for private vehicles.
If you have hired a car in Mallorca — or Majorca, as the island is often written in English — this is the rule most likely to wreck a day you had planned.
When the restriction applies
In 2026, from 15 May to 18 October, between 10:00 and 22:00, private cars cannot go past the checkpoint just after the Es Colomer viewpoint. Outside those dates and outside that time window, access is open.
Check before you go
The dates and the time window are set each season and have changed from one year to the next. The ones here are for 2026 and were verified on the date shown above. Before setting off, confirm them on the Consell de Mallorca website.
How to get up there during the restriction
- TIB bus, line 334. Runs from Port de Pollença all the way to the lighthouse. It is the simplest option and does not depend on finding a parking space.
- The shuttle from the park-and-ride. You leave the car before the checkpoint and go up on the shuttle service.
- By bike. There is no restriction on bicycles. It is a demanding climb and a busy one; avoid the middle of the day.
- Before 10:00 or after 22:00. If you are driving, getting up early is the real alternative. First thing there are also far fewer people at the viewpoint.
What is up there
The Formentor lighthouse, at the northern tip of the island, and on the way the Es Colomer and La Creueta viewpoints. Formentor beach is before the checkpoint and has its own car park, which fills early.
If you are in a hire car
No rental company mentions this restriction when they hand over the keys, just as almost none of them explains the tourist tax you will be charged at your accommodation. Factor it into the day: driving up at eleven in the morning in August is not an option, however empty the road looks from Port de Pollença.
Heading down the west coast afterwards? Deià and Banyalbufar are both on the Ma-10, and both have their own timing traps.
